What Was Wrong with That Then, Umps?

by  Matthew Stevenson

'Delicious reading for cricket fan...to look into mind of umpire'

About the book
There are countless books written about the wonderful sport of cricket, but not many from the unique perspective of the umpire. Matthew Stevenson's What Was Wrong With That Then, Umps? is an entertaining and amusing insight into the world of cricket. His diary covers five seasons spent as an umpire in recreational cricket, the many grounds he officiated at, the characters he encountered, the decisions he had to make - some right, some wrong - the cricket teas and the after match post-postmortems. Whether you are just an armchair cricket fan or an aficionado of the summer game, there is much in this book to interest and amuse you. For a player at any level, it will give you a greater understanding of the level of knowledge and concentration needed by the match officials who are so essential to recreational cricket.

About the author
Matthew Stevenson was born in Amersham in 1963. He played club cricket for thirty years, for Chalfont Saints C.C. from 1978-92 and for Chalfont St. Peter C.C. from 1993-2007, before retiring as a player and taking up umpiring in 2008. His other interests include all sports - especially football, rugby and tennis - long-distance walking and the countryside, British and maritime history, and current affairs.

'Spiritual book under cover of Fiction...'

Ratings ( 6.5 out of 10)

Story of a Krish who had bad days after glorious education. He was broken and lost; his wife left him. He cursed god for doing things with him; he continued asking for explanation for that..dismayed krish went on break. In his parental home away from a city in forest he finds his all answers..

Review

Business background is used to explain the 'Law of  Karma'; fluently written, easily understandable language and spiritual talk between 'Baba' and 'Krish' are enough to keep the reader engaged.
Rashmi Rathi being talented author has revealed her skill in this book; but however she failed to bring anything new in her first novella.
This book is not cup of tea for fiction reader; will be boring and disappointing for them. Although for readers hunting for inspirational talks; the book will be helpful.
The karma and its laws described in this book is not unknown from many of Indian readers; but the author has put them in easy words.

Cover page is disappointing, covering the short read; climax is as per expected. But till author could have written better and should have tried something more interesting and new instead of churning well known facts.

A crow-eyed peep into the backyard of a banking organization. An unusual portrayal of the life and times of an ordinary mortal and his subdued fight for survival . . . Listen to the whisper of the worms to hear the muffled wail of humans on the run, lured by the carrot, forced by the stick An unbalnced account of gagged sentiments . . . subtly unfolding the naivety of petty minds. Also of nepotism and dehumanized value systems A moving story of the commercialized people in an imaginary country called Marcardia, portrayed brilliantly through their psyche and polity. Makes one think, laugh and get emotionally chocked. Blended finely into the main fabric are vivid shots of rustic life lifted out of a fading frame; sweet smell of paddy fields on blossom . . . rhythmic splash of the wooden bucket in the farm well . . .

Daughter of the Sun, Book 1 - blurb

Sixteen-year- old Trinity was born during a solar eclipse and left at the doorsteps of a

convent along with a torn piece of papyrus covered with ancient symbols. Raised by

nuns in the English countryside, she leads a quiet life until she’s whisked away to the

Island of Cats and a grandmother she never knew.

But before they can get to know each other, her grandmother dies. All that Trinity has
left is a mysterious eye-shaped ring. And a thousand grieving cats. As Trinity tries to
solve the enigma of the torn papyrus, she discovers a world of bloody sacrifices and evil

curses, and a prophecy that points to her and her new feline abilities.
Unwilling to believe that any of the Egyptian gods could still be alive, Trinity turns to
eighteen-year- old Seth and is instantly pulled into a vortex of sensations that forces her
to confront her true self—and a horrifying destiny.

About the Author

A certified bookworm, Zoe Kalo has always been obsessed with books and reading.
Reading led to writing—compulsively. No surprise that at 16, she wrote her first novel,
which her classmates read and passed around secretly. The pleasure of writing and
sharing her fantasy worlds has stayed with her, so now she wants to pass her stories to
you with no secrecy—but with lots of mystery…
A daughter of adventurous expats, she’s had the good fortune of living on 3 continents,
learning 4 languages, and experiencing a multicultural life. Currently, she’s working on a
Master’s degree in Comparative Literature, which she balances between writing, taking
care of her clowder of cats, and searching for the perfect bottle of pinot noir.
